Giant porcupine excites passers-by in the center of Rotterdam

Not every day a huge porcupine walks across the Meent in Rotterdam-Centre. The city center was briefly a film set on Tuesday on which a girl and a gigantic beast were filmed on foot. In fact, the porcupine – a huge doll on wheels – caused such a stir that the film had to be stopped several times because enthusiastic passers-by who wanted to film the scene themselves walked into the image of the film crew.

The film, which will be called Totem, follows the 11-year-old girl Ama. As the daughter of asylum seekers from Senegal who have exhausted all legal remedies, she goes through a wintery Rotterdam in search of her father, hoping that she can somehow prevent deportation. Her mother and brother have already been arrested. On her quest, she also learns more about her own Senegalese background, with the help of her totem animal: the social media much-discussed porcupine by her side.

The film is directed by Sander Burger, whose film De Ververdeling won four Golden Calves last year. The Ververdeling is about the Deventer Murder Case and follows journalist Bas Haan, who devoted himself completely to the case.

The film Totem is expected to hit theaters at the end of this year.

Alderman Judith Bokhove was also shocked when she encountered the special beast
