Giant Oil and Gas Discovery in Aceh and East Kalimantan, 18 Times Bigger than Saudi Arabia

FAJAR.CO.ID, JAKARTA — SKK Migas and Mubadala Energy, international energy companies from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates have just announced the discovery of gas about 100 kilometers off the coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia.

Mubadala Energy is the operator of the South Andaman Gross Split PSC and this is the first deep well operated by the company, which was drilled to a depth of 4,208 meters at a sea water depth of 1,207 meters.

In this well, an extensive gas column was found with a thickness of more than 230 meters in the Oligocene sandstone reservoir. The well successfully delivered excellent quality gas with a capacity of 30 mmscf/d.

The gas content in the sea near Aceh is the second largest in the world. Meanwhile, the world’s number 3 largest was found in East Kalimantan last October.

The discovery of large gas reserves (gas resources discovery) is in line with the Indonesian Government’s target of achieving a petroleum production target of 1 million barrels per day (BOEPD) and natural gas of 12 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day (BSCFD) in 2030.

Head of SKK Migas, Dwi Soetjipto expressed his appreciation for the large gas discovery in South Andaman which is operated by Mubadala Energy Cooperation Contract Contractor (KKKS).

Dwi expressed his gratitude for the hard work and strong dedication shown by Mubadala Energy in carrying out deep sea drilling.

“And I congratulate Mubadala Energy on its success in finding large gas reserves,” he said in an official statement, released on Monday, January 1 2024.
