Giant in size, why is the Great Wall of China not visible from outer space?

Jakarta

There are rows of buildings that can be seen from outer space. However, Great Wall of China not one of them.

The Great Wall of China is the longest structure ever created by humans. It is so big and holds a lot of history, it is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World along with the Taj Mahal and the Eiffel Tower.

However, this gigantic wall cannot be seen from outer space. What is the reason?

The reason the Great Wall of China is not visible from space

Scientists have proven that the Great Wall of China is not visible from space. Both with the naked eye and from orbiting spacecraft.

Chris Hadfield in Live Science quoted on Tuesday (28/2) explained that the contours were too narrow and the colors made the Great Wall of China difficult to see.

This is also supported by Leroy Chiao, the person who took the photos Great Wall of China from outer space. According to the former NASA astronaut, he couldn’t see the wall when he took the photo.

So, what are the buildings visible from space? here is the list.

List of Buildings Visible from Space

Former Commander at the International Space Station (ISS), Chris Hadfield revealed that there are several buildings that can be seen directly by astronauts in outer space. Interestingly, some can be seen directly with the naked eye without even using a lens.

The list of such buildings is:

1. Bingham Canyon Mine (United States of America)

Bingham Canyon Mine is a mining site located about 32 km southeast of Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. The mine has been in operation since the 19th century and is still operating today.

According to NASA, it is about 4 kilometers long and 1,200 meters deep. The mine site is so large that it can be seen by NASA space shuttles flying between 305-531 km above sea level.

2. Palm Jumeirah Dubai (Dubai)

Palm Jumeirah Dubai is an artificial island in the shape of a palm tree in Dubai. NASA claims Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah can be seen from the Karman Line, the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.

Even International Space Station (ISS) astronauts can clearly see the stretch of artificial island using an 800mm lens.

3. Pyramid of Giza (Mesir)

The Great Pyramid of Giza is still being debated about how it looks from space. British astronaut Tim Peake said he couldn’t but see the massive structure clearly through an 800mm lens. Meanwhile, former NASA astronaut and ISS commander, Leroy Chiao said he could see the pyramids while in orbit.

“There is a lot to see from the ISS, even with the naked eye,” he said.

“For example, having found a large pyramid with a telephoto and being able to pick out the two large ones with the naked eye, as long as the lighting and weather conditions are good, as two small dots,” he continued.

4. Three Gorges Dam (Cina)

The dam that spans China’s Yangtze River is revealed by NASA to be visible from space. The Three Gorges Dam stands at 185 meters high and is more than 2 km long.

Building it is the world’s largest electricity-producing facility. The Three Gorges Dam is called the most expensive hydroelectric dam ever built.
