At the end of May 2023, NASA will keep an eye on it giant asteroid that will approach Earth. Is there a potential hazard?
Quoted from The Sun, Tuesday (9/5/2023) the large space rock is called 2023 CL3 which is estimated to be 200 meters wide. NASA has included the giant asteroid on the list of Earth Close Approaches along with other space rocks that will continue to be investigated.
Asteroid 2023 CL3 is twice the size of the Statue of Liberty. The famous New York icon stands at a height of 93 meters when including the pedestal, and measures 46 meters when measuring just the statue.
Therefore, these giant asteroids can cause serious damage if they collide with Earth. This is because if the asteroid is within 7.5 million km and is larger than a certain size, NASA would judge it to be a potential hazard.
Asteroid 2023 CL3 will be expected to pass by Earth on May 24, 2023 at a distance of less than 7.2 million km. It may sound far enough, but in space, scientists judge it as a short distance.
The giant asteroid is expected to zip past Earth at a speed of more than 26 thousand km/hour. But scientists are sure, this asteroid will pass safely.
