At the press conference following the Milwaukee Bucks’ loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Giannis Antetokounmpo was asked about the comment made by Donald Trump for him, which caused an uproar and reactions from the early hours of Saturday (2/11) onwards.
The Greek superstar and NBA champion wished, in a disarming way, good luck to both candidates for the presidency of the USA, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s statement in detail:
“I have no knowledge of his comments. At the end of the day I don’t watch politics that much and from what little I do, I try to keep my opinions to myself and my family. I’m here to play basketball and answer basketball questions. I wish the best of luck to both candidates.”
Trump’s racist comment
Donald Trump spoke at the home of the Milwaukee Bucks, the Fisery Forum, where the Republican National Convention was held last year. Initially, the Republican candidate appeared excited for his rally in New York’s Madison Square Garden, where several speakers made racist comments, including comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who called Puerto Rico a “trash island.”
However, he argued that a similar gathering is taking place in the NBA team’s court, proceeding with comments about Giannis Antetokounmpo who is one of the brightest stars of the American basketball league.
“Your team is very good. I would say that the Greek is a really good player. Do you agree? And tell me. Who is more Greek? The Greek or me? I’d say we’re the same, right?” said Donald Trump, consciously or unconsciously ignoring that Antetokounmpo was born in Greece to Nigerian parents, is a Greek citizen, speaks Greek and plays for the Greek National Team.
