Farewell to the Prince. At the age of 76 he passed away Gianni Saviothe historic Turin manager who has crossed the last thirty years of Italian and world cycling history with his teams. Born in 1948, he was overcome by a long illness.
Career
He began his career as sports director in 1986 at Santini-Closurethen also managing the Eurocar-Mosoca-Galli. In 1992 he took over the management of ZG Mobili-Selle Italia from Dino Zandegù, which over the years underwent various changes in sponsorship and names, including Selle Italia, Colombia-Selle Italia and Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni and Androni Giocattoli, to reach Drone Hopper -Androni Giocattoli. His last creation had been there GW-Shimano. Above all, the list of riders launched into great cycling is very long, from Andrea Tafi to Egan Bernal, passing through Nelson Rodriguez, Leonardo Sierra, José Rujano. He was also the sporting director of Michele Scarponi and Franco Pellizotti and discovered and launched the 19-year-old Bernal, the first Colombian to win the Tour de France. A huge expert on South American cycling, he was also the technical commissioner of Colombia and Venezuela. He led Santiago Botero to world time trial success. An uncommon elegance in an environment not always in line with his refined ways leaves an incredible void.
One of his races at the finish line in San Giovanni Rotondo, at the 2019 Giro, went down in history to celebrate the stage success of one of his riders, Fausto Masnada. During that Giro he also launched Mattia Cattaneo and Andrea Vendrame. His teams always ran on the attack, with a layout that Savio defined as “zone”: a captain and a crowd of breakaway men.
