The recently elected President of the Burkinabe Football Federation (FBF), Oumarou Sawadogo, discussed issues such as the development of football infrastructure, the development of sports and women’s football in a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino .
Gianni Infantino congratulated Sawadogo on his election as FBF President in August this year and recalled his two previous visits to the country – in 1998 as a fan at the Africa Cup of Nations and in January 2019 in his role as FIFA President.
“I congratulated them for qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and I wished their team the best of luck for qualifying for the 2026 World Cup At the same time, we discussed how we can continue to work together under the FIFA Forward program to improve the game’s infrastructure and offer more opportunities to local football enthusiasts,” said the FIFA President.
“I also reiterated FIFA’s commitment, through our joint initiative with the World Trade Organization (WHO), to producers in the so-called “Cotton 4 plus” countries, which provide a- in Burkina Faso, to help increase the export income of finished products such as. sportswear.” Currently, cotton is produced mainly as a raw material. However, FIFA and WHO signed in 2022 a memorandum of understanding exploring ways to change this practice so that cotton can be produced as a finished product.
Since 2016, the FBF has been running several projects in the country with money from FIFA forward program funded, including the installation of a modern artificial turf field at the Issoufou Joseph Conombo Stadium in Ouagadougou.
“It was good to welcome President Infantino, who listened carefully and recognized our concerns regarding infrastructure, training, development and women’s football,” said Sawadogo.
