Gianluigi Buffon Calls for Expansion of Soccer Goal Size to Adapt to Modern Game

Legendary Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon opened up talk about “the possibility of expanding the height and width of the goal,” in light of the developments that football has witnessed in recent years.

Buffon said, in an interview with Tuttosport newspaper: “There is talk about expanding the goal. We can think about it. The measurements have been the same since 1875, and now seeing the performance of some goalkeepers on long-range shots, it makes you think about modification.”

He added: “When I started football in 1998, I was among the five tallest in the Italian League, and last year in Parma I was also among the five tallest… but among 22 players on the field!”

He concluded: “30 years ago, about 10 goals were scored for every 50 shots. Now, at most, you find only 3 from a distance. It is very difficult to score a goal against a goal whose goalkeeper is two meters tall!”

The 45-year-old retired last August after a long career in the stadiums, during which he won many championships, the most important of which was the 2006 World Cup.
