In less than a month, President Alejandro Giammattei has issued messages about the management of Covid-19 in Guatemala, which have generated criticism and reproaches, because of that they have questioned the basis of his statements.
In the closing ceremony of a business meeting held in Andorra, Spain, at the end of April, Giammattei affirmed that the preventive use of Ivermectin replaced the Covid-19 vaccine and last night, that due to the “good management of the pandemic ”, The country was not eligible in the first“ round ”of doses of the vaccine.

GOOD PANDEMIC MANAGEMENT?
The president, who was visiting Mexico since Monday to meet with his counterpart Andrés Manuel López Obrador, justified upon his return to the country in an interview with the TV Azteca program “Hechos Guatemala” that the difficulties in acquiring vaccines against the Covid-19 is due to the “good management of the pandemic” that Guatemala has had.
According to Giammattei, the director of one of the vaccine manufacturers told him that Guatemala was not eligible for the first shipments for that reason.
“In the first place, we have to start from a premise as the director of one of the companies that makes the vaccine told me, look, you are not eligible in this first round because you have handled the pandemic very well.”, Highlighted Giammattei.
He also stated that López Obrador asked him how Guatemala has maintained “good numbers” during the health emergency.
“In fact, President López Obrador told us, look at your numbers have been very good, what happened? What did they do? We made an outline of the measures that were taken”, He highlighted.
IN ANDORRA, SAID THAT IVERMECTIN REPLACED VACCINE
Days before talking about “good management of the pandemic”, the president mentioned in a business activity, attended by some heads of state in Andorra, Spain for the Ibero-American Summit, that Ivermectin replaces “by a lot” the vaccine against Covid-19 if you take two six-milligram pills preventively, “worth the free prescription,” two daily every three weeks.
Regarding this, he affirmed that the consumption of this drug for some reason makes it easier for the virus to penetrate the cell and “that makes the contagion less”.
“We found that we had all the Ivermectin produced in the world, we bought it in Guatemala, we did not have capacity. There was a ban on making Ivermectin in Guatemala and what we did was give a sanitary registration to start producing Ivermectin in Guatemala.”, He mentioned.
A publication of the Guatemalan Center for Drug Information (CEGIMED) of the Faculty of Chemical Sciences and Pharmacy of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala, recommended on April 5, weeks before this statement, not to self-medicate with this medicine.
Both news have generated different reactions among the population, as well as civil society, which has criticized both the handling of the pandemic, and doctors who question the use of the medicine that the President assures is preventive for Covid-19.
