The man who drove as a wrong-way driver on the A58 and A16 highways on Sunday evening has confessed that he made a mistake. He said after the arrest by the police that he did not encounter any exits to leave the road. Surprisingly, there were no fatalities or injuries, police said.
The man drove from St. Willebrord on the A58 towards Breda and then on the A16 towards Hazeldonk on the wrong side of the road. According to the police, it was an ‘older man’.
Almost caused accidents
On the way, 130 kilometers per hour was driven and the driver almost caused a number of accidents. Oncoming traffic, including a police car, warned the driver in vain with high beams.
At least three police cars followed the car on the other side of the road, but the driver did not respond to the signals given to him for a long time. In the end, the police decided to stop a number of cars on the A16 near Hazeldonk, where the officers positioned themselves in a safe place.
‘Could have ended differently’
“Fortunately, the driver stopped and was removed from his car. This could have ended so differently,” a spokesperson reported. He was pleased with the alertness of the other road users.
The wrong-way driver had to surrender his driver’s license. The Central Bureau for Driving Licenses is going to investigate whether and when he can get behind the wheel again. This also includes the footage of the police and the official report drawn up against the man.
