The 19-year-old man from Drunen who fled after a shooting on January 15 and contributed to a fatal accident while driving on the A16 near Prinsenbeek, has regained consciousness after days of artificial coma. The suspect who was seriously injured in the crash was taken into custody on Wednesday after questioning by the police. He will remain in jail for at least 60 days. That says a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service (OM) on Thursday.
The man from Drunen is suspected of involvement in a shooting, possession of a firearm and co-causing a fatal accident in which three people were killed and two injured.
The 19-year-old suspect was seriously injured in the crash on the highway. He had to be kept under anesthesia for several days. The arraignment before the examining magistrate happened without his presence. Now that the man has regained consciousness, he appeared in the court’s council chamber on Wednesday, according to the spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service. Due to the ongoing investigation, the judiciary does not want to say what the outcome of the interrogation is. The OM also does not want to say anything about the condition of the suspect.
High speeds
It all started on Sunday, January 15 in Roosendaal with a shooting in which a 19-year-old resident of that city was shot twice in the body. The man from Drunen then fled from the police with two companions in a car. High speeds were achieved. On the A16 motorway, traffic was driven against the direction of travel.
That went wrong near Prinsenbeek. Two occupants of the getaway car were killed in the collision with an oncoming vehicle. It concerned the 33-year-old driver from Tilburg and a 17-year-old boy from Harreveld. The co-driver from Drunen was seriously injured.
There were three people in the vehicle that was hit head-on by the ghost-driving getaway car. The 54-year-old driver from Rotterdam did not survive the blow. A mother (51) and her daughter (14) from Antwerp were injured.
Police found a firearm in the getaway car after the crash.
