Ghassan Salama: Some Libyan hospitals have more equipment than developed countries, but they need maintenance

The UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salamé, said that the project to improve access to primary health care services in Libya “indicates the existing cooperation at the international level through the British government to get Libya out of the current situation.” It also indicates the mission’s interest in communicating closely with the Libyans, and the existing cooperation in various fields with the various ministries of the Libyan state.

The UN envoy added in his speech, during the announcement of the launch of the project presented by Britain in cooperation with the World Health Organization, that “interest in primary health care centers in a country like Libya is a matter of utmost importance. We must give it a high degree of attention, and we, as a United Nations mission, seek To contribute to building capabilities and support in cooperation with active countries with the United Nations.”

Salama continued, “The budgets of Arab countries focus on hospitals, while the first health portals do not receive the attention they deserve,” stressing that “I visited many hospitals in Libya and they have more equipment than developed countries, but they need maintenance, attention, and a solution.” “Problems related to the departure of a large number of technicians who were carrying out maintenance work on the devices due to the security conditions and the deterioration of the local currency exchange that we witnessed over the past year.”

He explained: “I tell you that the mission has returned to Libya and is at the disposal of all the ministries, with the Ministry of Health at its head. With the help of our colleagues from the United Nations member states, we will extricate Libya from the unnatural setback it has fallen into in various aspects of public life.”

He stressed that “Libya is a capable country.. Libya is a donor country.. Libya has been given very great human and material capabilities, but even its dear people sometimes suffer setbacks. It is the duty of the international community to stand by the member states, and Libya has been in friendly relations with the United Nations since its establishment in 1945. This connection requires standing by her side to get her out of the passing setback she is going through.”
