Accra: A 63-year-old priest married a 12-year-old girl in the African country of Ghana. BBC reported the news. Spiritual leader Numo Borketi Lawe Suru 33 married a 12-year-old in Nungwa area of Accra. The wedding was done in a traditional way with hundreds of people witnessing the grand ceremony. Suru is a person who holds the title of ‘Gborbu Wulomo’ known as the traditional high priest.
It is an influential title in the Nungwa indigenous community. The wedding took place with great fanfare despite the legal minimum age for marriage in Ghana being 18. The pictures of the wedding ceremony went viral. Many organizations and human rights activists have come forward to point out that the marriage is illegal. It was also demanded that the marriage should be annulled and an investigation should be conducted against the priest. At the same time, several community leaders came forward to defend the marriage.

It was argued that there is nothing wrong in following customs and traditions and that the girl’s role as a priest’s wife is purely a traditional practice.
