The head of the Chamber of Mining Companies in Ghana, Joshua Mortoti, said that the country recorded a 32% increase in gold production last year, which enabled it to regain the lead in gold producers in Africa.

Its gold production rose to 3.7 million ounces in 2022, compared to 2.8 million ounces in the previous year.

Murtoti attributed the annual increase in efficiency to the expansion of production from existing mines.

He explained that the Chamber’s companies sold more than 77,620 ounces of the precious metal as part of the local gold purchase program, a program launched by the Central Bank to boost reserves.
