The GGD Zeeland is concerned about the low vaccination rate in the province. Less than three-quarters of Zeeland children receive all the shots against diseases such as measles, polio and meningococcus.
That is the lowest percentage in the Netherlands and far below the RIVM standard of 90 percent. An outbreak of an infectious disease can therefore have serious consequences, says Marlène Nieskens of the GGD Zeeland against Omroep Zeeland.
“You get optimal protection with the highest possible vaccination rate. We do not achieve that in Zeeland. As a result, the chance of an outbreak and the consequences of an outbreak are considerably greater.”
Doubts after corona
The standard of 90 percent is not achieved in any Zeeland municipality. Reimerswaal, Borsele, Tholen and Sluis are even below 70 percent. The GGD hopes that municipalities will investigate how vaccine refusers can be better reached to convince them to take the shots.
Many Zeelanders refuse vaccination for religious reasons, but since corona the vaccination rate has fallen sharply, especially among non-believers. “People who had doubts about the corona vaccines are now also choosing not to vaccinate their children with the vaccines from the National Vaccination Program,” said Nieskens.
Big differences
Throughout the Netherlands, 84.2 percent of children are fully vaccinated by the age of 2. The regional differences are large; Zeeland is bottom with 74.8 percent. Only two regions achieve the RIVM standard of 90 percent: the GGD Gooi en Vechtstreek and the GGD Groningen.
