GGD Utrecht hands out 1200 vaccines after power failure, hundreds of people in line

From 8.30 pm people can come by without an appointment for a vaccination. Hundreds of people have come to the location to get a shot. The GGD calls on you not to come to the location anymore because of the crowds. Nearly all vaccines have now been removed.

“There is no guarantee for a vaccine,” a spokesperson for GGD Utrecht told RTL Nieuws. “The vaccines were first distributed to employees of the GGD. In the meantime, other people have also come by for a shot.”

Open until midnight

The power outage was caused by a burst water pipe. According to the spokesperson, distributing the vaccines is a guideline to prevent waste. The location is open until midnight and extra employees are on hand to pick up all vaccines.

The Janssen vaccine has recently stopped being given to people given under the age of 40. This is done after the advice of the Health Council, which advised the cabinet to give young people the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine. “Janssen’s vaccine is safe for people over 18. Throwing away a vaccine is of course a shame. That is why we have chosen to give it away now,” says an employee of the GGD who is present at the vaccination location.

“It’s great that the people here are in a good mood. They are especially happy that they can get a shot. There is no pressure.”
