GGD: “Third week in a row that the number of new infections in our region has decreased”

The number of new infections in the Groningen region has decreased for the third week in a row. This is evident from the weekly update of the GGD.

Since the start of the corona crisis, the virus has now been diagnosed in 36,222 people in the province. Since the previous update, 751 new infections have been added. “This is a decrease compared to the week before, when it concerned 890 new cases, and the third week in a row that the number of new infections in our region is decreasing,” writes the GGD. “The infection rate in our region is 123 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, well below the national average of 203 per 100,000 inhabitants. Despite this, the classification level of our region with this contamination rate and 39 hospital admissions per 1,000,000 inhabitants is still very serious. ”

More than 27,000 vaccinations were put
In the past seven days, 27,297 vaccinations have been administered in the province. On average there are now 4,000 injections per day. “As of this week, anyone born in 1963, 1964, 1965 can make an appointment online, even if the invitation has not yet been received. Once the invitation has been received, an appointment can also be made by telephone. This is possible with the number in the invitation letter. ” In total, 171,919 injections have now been taken in the region. These are both first and second injections.

Age distribution of new infections has shifted
The proportion of people aged 30 and older who test positive for the coronavirus has decreased in the past week. The infection rate in the 0 to 14-year-old group was 9% in the past week, in the 15 to 19-year-old category it was 16% and in the 20 to 29-year-old age group 28%. In the 30 to 65-year-old category, the infection rate was 42%, compared to 44% last week. In the group older than 65 years, the percentage was 5%, compared to 8% in the previous update.

Most new infections in home situations
Of the new infections discovered in the past week, 59% of the cases were successful in identifying a suspected source. This shows that 56% of the infections occurred in home situations, 28% during a visit in the home situation, 11% in the work situation, 1% in a care institution and 4% at a party. In schools and childcare, the percentage was 0% last week. “Due to the May holiday, school attendance in the past 2 weeks did not play a significant role in the spread of the corona virus. More than one suspected source can be designated for each new contamination, the above percentages therefore add up to more than 100%. “
