In the province of Groningen, 467 new confirmed coronavirus infections were detected in the past week. This is evident from the weekly update of the GGD on Wednesday.
More than half (57 percent) of the positively tested persons are between 18 and 24 years old. Twenty-three people with a new infection are under 18 years old, two of whom are under 12 years old.
Four percent of the new infections had a suspected source of infection abroad. In more than half of the new infections, the probable source was in the home situation and in about a third in social activities, such as parties, catering and leisure activities such as sports and student activities.
There is a sharp increase in the number of new infections compared to the previous weeks, reports GGD Groningen. Especially in the group of young adults between 18 and 24 years old, many infections are seen. About 70 percent of the people with a new infection live in the city of Groningen.
Preventing the spread of virus
According to the GGD, it is very important that people who have tested positive for the corona virus avoid contact with others (isolation) and that people who have been in close contact with a corona patient observe the quarantine advice (10 days at home quarantine counted from the last moment of contact ) to hold. In this way, the virus is prevented from spreading.
Since the start of the epidemic, COVID-19 has been diagnosed in 1,367 people in the province of Groningen. In the past week, 5,630 people were tested at the test locations in Groningen and Veendam. Of these, 333 people were positive. No deaths from proven corona infection were reported. The total number of deaths remains at 19.
85 new infections with the corona virus have been diagnosed in the province of Groningen since Tuesday. Of these, 61 are in the city of Groningen.
The city of Groningen is therefore in fifth place in the list of places with the most new infections. Only in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht were more infections.
Province of Groningen by alarm phase ‘worrisome’
The province of Groningen is expected to go from alert phase ‘vigilant’ to ‘worrying’ at the end of the week. Sources have confirmed this to the NOS. This concerns the safety regions of Groningen, Gooi and Vechtstreek, Zaanstreek-Waterland, Gelderland-South, Brabant-North, Brabant-Southeast, Flevoland and South-Holland-South. The measures are expected to be announced on Friday.
A region is classified in the ‘worrying’ category if there are more than 7 positive people per 100,000 inhabitants. In Groningen, this signal value has been above this value for several days (Wednesday at 14.5).
The cabinet is currently discussing these regions. It is still unknown what the measures will be exactly.
Currently, the alert phase is worrying for six regions in the west of the Netherlands. Since Sunday, the extra corona measures have been in force, such as all catering establishments closed at 1.00 am. At midnight the music has to be turned off and no one is allowed in anymore.
The maximum group size in those regions is 50 people, both indoors and outdoors. An exception is made for funerals, religious gatherings, demonstrations and theater performances.
Rural
The number of corona infections in the Netherlands has increased to 100,597. That is an increase of 2,357 compared to Tuesday, a new day record.
On Tuesday, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) reported 2,250 positive tests. In the past seven days, more than 14,000 people tested positive for the coronavirus.
The number of hospital admissions rose by 32 between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning and the number of deaths by five. This data sometimes arrives with a delay.
There are 104 corona patients in intensive care, reports the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution. That is thirteen more than Tuesday.
Because the pressure on regular care is increasing in some regions, fourteen corona patients have been moved to hospitals outside their own region. This concerns one IC patient. “The expectation is that the number of patients admitted, and thus the requests for relocation, will increase significantly in the coming days,” says Ernst Kuipers of the National Acute Care Network.
