GGD Fryslân will start vaccinating against human papillomavirus (hpv) from 30 January. This virus is transmitted through intimate contact and can cause cancer of the mouth or pubic area in both men and women.
The vaccine consists of two injections and is intended for everyone born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2003. The vaccination is part of the National Immunization Programme. GGD Fryslân gives the vaccinations at the five injection locations where the corona vaccinations are also given: Leeuwarden, Heerenveen, Drachten, Sneek and Dokkum.
Girls have been offered an HPV vaccination since 2010. Since 2022, boys are also invited for this in the year they turn ten. In addition, in 2022 and 2023, teenagers up to the age of eighteen who have not yet been (fully) vaccinated will have the chance to protect themselves against the virus.
