An unhealthy lifestyle causes many health problems. Scientists and governments are joining forces with a Prevention Promoter to combat obesity. Healthy Helmond is also participating in the plans.
An unhealthy lifestyle carries many risks of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
An unhealthy lifestyle carries many risks of diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Of the 600,000 people treated for cancer each year, 30 to 40 percent could have been prevented with a healthy diet and adequate exercise. For cardiovascular disease, even 80 percent of cases can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle.
A healthy living environment in the neighbourhoods
An unhealthy lifestyle leads to obesity in many people. In the Netherlands, more than half of the population is currently overweight. With the Prevention Promoter, a coalition of parties is tackling overweight and obesity by creating healthy environments.
Neighborhood of the future
The parties include the Ministry of Health, the Dutch Federation of University Medical Centers, the Heart Foundation, Zilveren Kruis, TNO and various universities. #HealthyHelmond participates in an Innovation Infrastructure District and a Kickstart project in the District of the Future.
Reducing health inequalities and reducing pressure on healthcare
The aim of the project is to look at the environment in an integrated and interdisciplinary way, so that lifestyle is tackled simultaneously in schools, in neighbourhoods, at work and in healthcare. This will make people fitter and more energetic, reduce the pressure on healthcare and reduce health inequalities.
An application for the Prevention Promoter has been submitted to the National Growth Fund by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. At the end of June it will be announced whether we can start with the Prevention Monitor in Helmond.
