COVID-19 vaccination in children is allowed if it has passed a gap of 28 days from routine vaccination and/or two weeks from the first dose of vaccine. The provision of this pause is carried out in order to prevent the risk of post-immunization Adverse Events (AEFI) in children.
What is AEFI?
Quoted from the official page of the COVID-19 Task Force, Post-Immunization Adverse Events (AEFI) are medical symptoms that can occur after vaccination/immunization which are suspected to be related to the vaccination/immunization given.
AEFIs are generally mild. These symptoms will go away on their own without needing treatment.
Then, what is the relationship between AEFI and the vaccination interval?
dr Ariani Dewi Widodo, SpA(K) a pediatrician explained the importance of the distance or time lag between one vaccine and another, including the COVID-19 vaccine. He explained that this distance was done solely so that the vaccinations given could work optimally. Dr. Ariani also explained that in addition to optimizing the effectiveness of the vaccine, time lag is also needed to observe if for example there are side effects that occur, in this case, Post-Immunization Adverse Events.
“This distance actually provides benefits. If, it is not impossible, there is a Post Immunization Adverse Event (AEFI), for example fever, or a little diarrhea, sometimes there are other problems too but usually fever is the most common. So that we know about AEFI It was caused by which vaccine,” said Dr Ariani at detikcom, Friday (12/17/2021).
“We also have to know which vaccines that cause Post-Immunization Adverse Events are vaccines. Don’t let us become ‘siwer’ because we give too many vaccines or are too close together,” he continued.
So, what AEFIs are at risk of appearing in children after being vaccinated? Dr. Ariani details it as follows:
- Fever
- Painful
- Swelling at the injection site
- Weak
- Diarrhea
However, Dr. Ariani said that children who were vaccinated using the Sinovac type would not experience severe AEFIs like other types of vaccines.
