REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Telstar 1 is first communication satellite which can transmit television signals from Europe to North America. Telstar 1, launched into orbit on July 10, 1962. A Delta rocket was used to launch it into orbit.
The Telstar, a 171-pound, 34.5-inch ball covered in solar panels and packed with transistors, sent out its first signal shortly after liftoff from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
Reported from Earth Sky, The American flag was finally seen outside a receiving station in Andover, Maine, two days after the initial transmission of the image was made. After that, Telstar started sending data such as calls, faxes and live television pictures.
After the introduction of the Telstar, President John F. Kennedy stated that it was an outstanding representation of America’s space achievements. Telstar 1 paved the way for the introduction of round-the-clock live news coverage.
