Getting to know Pertamina’s new type of fuel called Solar 51

KOMPAS.com – Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Pertamina starting to apply CN 51 diesel fuel oil with a sulfur content of 50 ppm equivalent to Euro IV which is carried out at all gas stations throughout Indonesia starting April 1, 2022.

There are a number of advantages it has Solar 51 compared to the previous type of diesel fuel which is considered more environmentally friendly.

The carbon emissions that are more friendly than Solar 51 are due to Pertamina using a lower sulfur content, which is only a maximum of 50 parts per million (ppm) or following the EURO IV standard.

While the previous type of diesel, the old version of Pertamina Dex, had a maximum sulfur content of 500 ppm.

“The exhaust emissions of vehicles using this type of fuel will certainly be cleaner, which will further improve air quality to be cleaner and healthier and significantly contribute to supporting Indonesia’s energy transition program,” said Director General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Tutuka Ariadji as quoted from BetweenSaturday (4/2/2022).

Implementation solar 51 This is a follow-up to the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number P.20/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/3/2017 of 2017 dated April 7, 2017 concerning the Quality Standards for Exhaust Gas Emissions for New Type Vehicles Category M, Category N and Category O.

As well as the Letter of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number S-786/MENLHK-PPKL/SET/PKL-3/5/2020 dated May 20, 2020 regarding Postponing the Application of Diesel Motor Exhaust Emissions.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) requires every business and production activity of motorized vehicles with four or more wheels to meet the new types of Exhaust Emissions Quality Standards.

Where the test is carried out using diesel fuel with a minimum Cetane Number (CN) parameter of 51, a maximum sulfur content of 50 ppm and a viscosity of 2-4.5 mm2/s which will take effect on 7 April 2022.

“Through this inauguration as well as socialization, the government hopes to increase public awareness to use fuel that is more environmentally friendly and in accordance with vehicle engine specifications required by vehicle manufacturers,” said Tutuka.
