Research published in the journal Nature shows that the procedure, which mixes genetic material from three adult donors, managed to create healthy-looking embryos.

They add that trials with monkeys born with the same technique, now three years old, show that they are in good health.

A public consultation on the ethics of this procedure is currently underway in the UK.

Although in this country it is allowed to use the procedure in the laboratory, the embryos created cannot be used in treatments.

The results of the consultation are expected in 2013.

The technique is designed to prevent so-called mitochondrial diseases, which cause serious disabilities such as muscle weakness, blindness and heart failure, and are transferred only from mother to child.

These diseases are caused by defects in the mitochondria, the “engine” of cells.
