Toyota introduced a revolutionary invention in the form of a portable fuel cell. It fits in a backpack and acts as a driver for drones, vehicles, but also as a source of energy and heating for families.
Toyota recently unveiled innovative portable hydrogen cartridges at Japan Mobility Bizweek that promise to revolutionize electromobility. Originally developed by the Toyota Woven subsidiary, these cartridges were first introduced as a prototype in 2022. Since then, they have undergone significant development and are now a practical solution for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs).
Eliminate stops at charging stations

One of the main advantages of hydrogen cartridges is the ability to quickly replace when the hydrogen level is low, which eliminates the need for long stops at charging stations. The system enables an almost unlimited range of electric cars with fuel cells, thereby increasing their practicality and appeal to consumers.
A wide range of uses
Portable hydrogen cartridges aren’t just for vehicles. According to Toyota, they can also be used as a source of energy for housing, generators, household appliances, and even for cooking. In collaboration with Rinnai Corporation, a hydrogen cooker was introduced to the public, showing the versatility of this technology. The cartridges could also be a source of power in an emergency, such as a power outage.
The hydrogen cartridge weighs approximately 5 kilograms and its dimensions are 40 x 18 centimeters. It should offer up to 3.3 kWh of energy, depending on the efficiency of the external fuel cell, which takes care of turning the hydrogen back into electrical energy.
Hydrogen as the fuel of the future
Hydrogen is seen as a promising solution for a sustainable future, as its use does not produce CO₂ emissions, only water. When produced from renewable sources such as solar or wind power, it can make a significant contribution to global emission reduction targets. Major automakers such as Hyundai, BMW and Honda are already exploring ways to make hydrogen technology even more affordable.
Although portable hydrogen cartridges represent a major step forward, their widespread use requires the development of infrastructure for the production, distribution and storage of hydrogen. So Toyota is working with partners to build hydrogen filling stations and other necessary facilities to bring this technology to the masses.
