The early 1990s were a turbulent time. No one was sure what to do, and that included television entertainment. The existing formats were being phased out and there were no new ones. Reminisce with us about the most iconic columns of a TV show!
The wild nineties brought not only a capitalist boom to the Czech Republic, but also unprecedented television entertainment. Boring state party broadcasting was replaced by crazy contests, American movies and weird shows, which aimed to entertain the audience in the most primitive way possible, which was consuming the new wave of entertainment. The transition from communist television to commercial entertainment was wild, and not always perfect. However, if we look back to this golden era, we will find that there was something going for it in the panopticon of TV competitions in the nineties.
turmoil after revolution

At the beginning of the nineties, a wave of return arose. We went back to the archives, and many people who had left television for political reasons in previous decades got to return to the screen. The movement has not escapeda television show either. But it often seemed worse than fun. An example can be in H calls even after twenty years. Although Miroslav Horníček was a master of talk entertainment, this comeback did not go well. The magic of the original H Talks was there, and the cycle felt like a sad reminder of something that would have been if there hadn’t been a routine.
Waves of competition
Perhaps apart from programs with Halina Pawlovská, in which we ate and drank, in the nineties we mainly competed on public television. Competitions that were not only about money were also successful. The Brno ČT studio was the most prolific in the production of competition programs. For five whole years, from 1996 to 2000, the knowledge competition Pyramid was on the screens, and almost everyone who lived through the nineties as a child will not forget the lucky balls that the Brno studio threw at the contestants in a competition hip hop hop.
On the other hand, the competition forgot Co je to? newspapers, the competitors could take away a gold bar.
Competitions for couples
Few people today remember the competition program Vaše velka premira, in which new couples competed. Competitors assembled crates or made beds, and for that they could take home a vacuum cleaner, a washing machine or a trip. It is true that the channel OK3, on which your first appearance was shown, offered much more interesting programs during its short period, in which couples could be seen, and not necessarily as new ones. The OK3 channel was created as a result of abandoned Soviet television frequencies and gave, among other things, the first whiff of television eroticism.
Battle of televisions
In 1993, the first commercial television appeared. No, it wasn’t a Nova, but a TV Premiere, which turned into today’s Prima. Although the premiere did not rely heavily on his own work, some appeared in his program from time to time. Among other things, we were able to enjoy the first televised poker on the screens, which was actually the first low-cost telephone tournament on Czech screens.
If we had to say that Telepoker was at a low cost from today’s point of view, the following tournament would have to fall into the category of believing well. It was called the Lucky Three and it was based on a principle that is completely unbelievable today. The presenter introduced one advertisement at a time and then asked the audience a question about, for example, the exact wording in the advertising slogan. Viewers who watched the ad carefully could call the phone number and, if they were lucky, win three thousand crowns. The lucky three were based on open and hidden advertisements today not only by the Council for Radio and Television Broadcasting, but also that the viewers would have eyes popping out of their sockets.
Legendary performances
The first decade after the Velvet Revolution brought an unprecedented number of fondly remembered entertainment programs. In the 1990s, television screens were literally filled with entertainment and competition shows. And to gain the popularity of the viewers, the creators tried with different formats, with almost unusual entertainment programs and talk shows.
