Get to know the programming of the 15th Latin American South Pole International Film Festival
From Monday, July 25 to Saturday, July 30, the 15th Latin American South Pole International Film Festival, settling again in the corners of the José Bohr Municipal Theater in Punta Arenas, to welcome the audiences who arrive on each occasion to appreciate the various samples proposed by the contest.
From fiction feature films, documentaries, films with themes of indigenous peoples, denunciations, animated shorts and more, those who attend the festival will find themselves, whose face-to-face exhibitions and parallel activities are free of charge. In addition, there will be an exhibition of local illustrators that will accompany the conference in the foyer of the theater, in an initiative to give visibility to the new talents of graphic art in the territory.
Regarding the programming of this edition, Patricio Riquelme, director of the Latin American South Pole Film Festival, assured that “as always and during all these years, we have brought materials that are very sensitive, difficult to distribute, there are Chilean, Argentinean, foreign , but all in the field of Latin American cinema, a cinema more committed to reality and its contemporary problems”.
“My brothers dream awake” (2021), the award-winning film by the filmmaker Claudia Huaiquimilla, will be in charge of opening the Festival, on the opening day of Monday 25, at 8:00 p.m. The director will be present during the exhibition and will later participate in a conversation with the public.
Thanks to A call which lasted until June 30, dozens of achievements made by students were received. Finally, 13 were selected through the curatorial work of filmmaker Francisco Venegas Paiva, an archive, collection and programming professional at the Cineteca Nacional de Chile. In this way, the Student Voices category will exhibit a selection of films made by students from regions such as Los Ríos, Ñuble, Los Lagos and Magallanes, and also from Colombia and Paraguay.
Additionally, the Festival will offer activities other than exhibitions, as a way to extend the audiovisual work of the meeting, as well as enhance the training area that promotes the cinematographic universe. This year, the parallel events are cinema forums related to the creative, working woman, within the different areas that cinema has in general.
The first activity of this type will be the launch of the book “Chilean filmmakers, cinema under gender inequality” (2022) by Antonio Machuca Ahumada, doctor of education, who will come to the city of Punta Arenas especially to give a talk about it. This event is open to the public, but women filmmakers, audiovisualists, teachers and tutors are especially invited. It will include a presentation of the research carried out by the educator to converge in this book, in which the cultural context in which the pioneering filmmakers directed, in order to reveal the contribution of women to Chilean audiovisual production, is especially highlighted.
Another milestone of this type will be the “Film Assembly and Restoration Workshop”, by Carmen Brito Alvarado, who has stood out nationally and internationally in the field of cinema. Her workshop is aimed at film students, audiovisualists, people who are interested in the preservation of film materials, archives and film creation. The training instance will deal with film restoration, which is one of the high points in the path of the workshop facilitator.

This edition will also have three extensions, again and as is tradition in homage to the birth of cinema in the city of Porvenir, on Friday the 29th, in Tierra del Fuego, and for the first time in Puerto Natales, in the province of Última Esperanza, thank you to the alliances with the municipalities of both localities. The 15th Latin American South Pole International Film Festival is financed by the Seremi of Cultures, Arts and Heritage through the Program for Strengthening the Regional Cultural Identity of the Magallanes Citizenship area.
