Get to know the PRFR Method, Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia Facial Pain Without Surgery

Suara.com – Pain in the face next to or trigeminal neuralgia often feels so unbearable that it can make the sufferer want to commit suicide. If the drug doesn’t work, usually the doctor will perform PRFR or Percutaneous Radio Frequency Rhizotomy.

PRFR is performed when regular pain relievers are given until antiepileptic drugs are no longer effective in reducing pain.

PRFR or other terms radiofrequency ablation can be a solution for facial pain next to trigeminal neuralgia. PRFR technology has a fairly good success rate.

According to the Main Clinical Neurosurgery Specialist Dr. Indrajana, dr. Mustaqim Prasetya, SpBS, FINPS after patients underwent PRFR, many patients no longer need to take nerve painkillers.

“Face pain next to trigeminal neuralgia can be cured with PRFR. This technology can be used in cases of patients who do not allow surgery because their condition is medically impossible,” said dr. Mustaqim in commemoration of ‘International Trigeminal Neuralgia Awareness Day’, Wednesday (13/10/2021).

Most patients’ conditions are impossible in this operation, because patients often experience severe and acute pain during the surgical process because they have to make incisions or injection needles in the painful part of the face.

However, through the PRFR method that uses radiofrequency ablation technology, it can finally make patients with side facial pain who are reluctant or afraid of surgery have other options.

“The patient had surgical therapy but failed and in cases of severe acute pain that requires immediate treatment, PRFR can be performed,” continued Dr. Mustaqim.

PRFR or radiofrequency ablation is a form of interventional pain management (IPM), which is carried out by sending radiofrequency heat waves to the trigeminal nerve branch according to the facial area experiencing pain.

In radiofrequency ablation, the heat or thermal waves generated by the electric current will block the pain from attacking the nerves to the brain, so that during the action the patient does not feel pain in his face.
