Get to know Sarcosuchus, One of the Largest Ancient Crocodile Species in the World

Tutwuri.id – If you mention Sarcosuchus, of course, you can’t escape the type of crocodile with a giant size that has lived on earth millions of years ago.

When compared with the largest crocodile species currently held by saltwater crocodiles, it seems that there are no more than half of them.

It is known that the saltwater crocodile has a length of between 3.5 and 5.2 meters. While the ancient crocodile Sarcosuchus has a length of up to 12 meters.

Habitat Alami Sarcosuchus

Sarcosuchus is thought to have lived at the beginning of the Cretaceous period or at 113 million years ago where these animals were scattered in what is now the Niger region, West Africa.

According to the presentation of Mark Young, a paleontologist at the University of Edinburgh, this crocodile lives in large rivers.

“Several specimens from Tunisia suggest they went to the river delta,” Mark wrote.

Giant Crocodile Other Than Sarcosuchus

As previously mentioned, this ancient crocodile was able to grow to a size of up to 12 meters. In addition to Sarcosuchus, it seems that there are other crocodiles with the same size and maybe even bigger.

“There was a Deinosuchus from the late Cretaceous that would probably rival the size of Sarcosuchus,” said Mark.

In addition, in the Amazon region there was also a type of Caiman (crocodile relative) with the size of a giant that is estimated to have lived 5-10 million years ago.

Unlike the types of crocodiles that live today, Sarcosuchus has a very large body size with a length of up to 13 meters.

In addition, this ancient crocodile did not have ball joints that were between each vertebra as is commonly found in modern crocodiles.

Finally, Sarcosuchus is very different from today’s crocodiles, this is because these ancient crocodiles do not have direct descendants or evolutionary results from this ancient crocodile species.
