Get the Latest Apple Apps Updates for Media File Compatibility

Apple apps like Photos, iMovie, Safari, Keynote, and QuickTime Player work with many media formats. Some apps prefer certain formats, but most formats can be handled in most apps without additional software. Older or special formats may not work as expected if your device, operating system (macOS, iOS, or iPadOS), or the app you are using to view or play the file does not support the file format.

Install any available software updates for your Mac and software updates for your iPhone or iPad. If the media format used by the file is still not supported after the update, search the Internet or the App Store for an app that can provide this support. You can search by the name of the format or by the filename extension, i.e. H. after the letters at the end of the file name, e.g. E.g. .avi, .wmv or .mkv.

On a Mac, you may be able to determine the format by selecting the file in Finder and then pressing Command-I to open an Info window. The format may appear after the Type label, e.g. E.g. “Type: Matroska Video File”.
