What can the new iPad Air do?

The OLED displays are reserved for the Pro models, so that iPad Air is equipped with the well-known IPS LCD screens. Nevertheless, the display is impressive because it supports the large P3 color space and True Tone. However, ProMotion technology for particularly high refresh rates is missing. The 13-inch model reaches 600 nits of brightness, while the 11-inch model reaches up to 500 nits. The 11-inch model offers a resolution of 2360 x 1640 pixels, the 13-inch model 2732 x 2048 pixels. Both variants have a pixel density of 264 ppi.

Rumors that the iPad Air would inherit a mini-LED display from the iPad Pro did not come true. The “Liquid Retina” display still uses LED backlighting and achieves a brightness of up to 500 cd/m² on the 11-inch model and up to 600 cd/m² on the 13-inch model. HDR is not supported by either model, unlike the iPad Pro. The IPS panels have stable viewing angles and cover the P3 color space. Both Air models offer a refresh rate of 60 Hz. ProMotion with up to 120 Hz is reserved for the Pro models.

The M2 chip, Apple’s own SoC (System on a Chip), replaces the M1. The M2 offers eight CPU cores (four performance and four efficiency cores), ten graphics cores and 8 GB of RAM. According to Apple, the new iPad Air with the M2 chip is up to 50% faster than its predecessor with the M1. The Neural Engine in the M2 has 16 cores and, according to Apple, is up to 40% faster than the one in the M1. AI applications such as the image editing software Pixelmator benefit from this.

The iPad Air can still be unlocked using a fingerprint via Touch ID in the standby button or used for payments via Apple Pay. The new Pencil Pro charges inductively on the side of the iPad Air and supports the new hover function. Alternatively, the cheaper model is also compatible with a USB-C plug.

The iPad Air’s front camera has an ultra-wide-angle lens and supports Center Stage mode, which automatically tracks the speaker and adjusts the framing. As with the standard iPad, the front camera is now in the middle of the long side. The rear camera still offers 12-megapixel photos and 4K video recording at up to 60 fps.

Apple has also updated the wireless connections. In addition to WLAN 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 is now also on board, while the predecessor was still equipped with WLAN 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. A mobile version (WiFi and Cellular) with 5G is also available as an option and only supports eSIMs.

The USB-C port transfers data at up to 10 GBit/s and can drive an external monitor at 6K at 60 Hz. However, Thunderbolt support is reserved for the Pro models. A Smart Connector enables connection to the Magic Keyboard with trackpad.
