„But unlike that, what we saw among our 20 samples was that a number of them actually had fairly robust viral loads. This is worrying in the sense that there is certainly enough virus to be able to sequence it, and there may probably be enough virus to pass it on.“, Said the researcher.

None of the 20 patients studied were hospitalized and it is not known if they transmitted the disease to others, Dr. Roychoudhury added.

A recent study by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also showed that vaccinated people who contracted the disease are also likely to be infected with other newer variants.

Data released earlier this week showed that on April 30, there were 10,262 cases of post-vaccination infection among the 101 million people who were fully vaccinated.

About 555 of these 10,000 samples were sequenced, with researchers finding that 356 were identified as worrying variants. Of these, more than half were with the British version, 33% were with one of the two variants in California, 8% were with the Brazilian version and 4% were with the South African version.

Dr Roychoudhury said the finding of high viral loads showed the importance of monitoring detection cases and stressed the importance of continuing self-isolation..
