Jakarta: There will be an asteroid phenomenon this October. One of them, the Orionid meteor shower, is thought to peak in mid-October each year.

Philosophy it is considered one of the most beautiful meteor showers of the year. Reporting from science.nasa.gov, Orionid meteors are known for their brightness and speed. This fast meteor traveled at a speed of about 148,000 mph (66 km/s) into the Earth’s atmosphere. Fast meteors can leave bright trains (flames of glowing debris behind the meteor) that last several seconds to minutes.

Sometimes fast meteors can turn into fireballs. The Orionids are also framed by some of the brightest stars in the night sky, providing a stunning backdrop for these spectacular meteors.

Orionid meteor shower it will last from 2 October to 7 November 2024, and will reach its peak on 21 October 2024. At its peak, it is estimated that up to 20 meteors will appear each hour.

The Orionids can be seen in both the northern and southern hemispheres for several hours after midnight. Look for a place away from big cities or street lights. Prepare yourself by bringing a sleeping bag, blanket, or lawn chair.

Lie on your back with your feet facing southeast if you are in the northern or northeast hemisphere. For those in the southern hemisphere, and look up, enjoying as much of the sky as possible.

In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will change and you will start seeing meteors. Be patient, this show lasts until dawn, so you’ll have plenty of time to catch a glimpse.

The constellation Orion is the point or radiant point in the sky where the Orionids appear. Orion is also the source of the name of this meteor shower: Orionid. The constellations from which meteor showers get their name only help observers to determine which meteor shower they are seeing on a particular night. Constellations are not the source of meteors.

NASA said you don’t just have to look at the constellation Orion to see the Orionid meteor in the night sky. The Orionids are best viewed from an angle of 45 to 90 degrees from the radiant.

The Orionids would appear farther and more spectacular from this point of view. If you look directly at the radiant, you will see that the meteor is short. This is a visual effect called foreshortening.
