Extreme heat is expected during the months of March, April and part of May 2024. The hot season will be intense in Petén and Zacapa.

Heat waves will hit the national territory between the months of March and July, which, together with other factors, could increase the effects of droughts in different regions.

The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (Insivumeh) issued a worrying forecast for Guatemala, anticipating that in 2024 the heat will be more intense due to the El Niño phenomenon.

“Due to the El Niño phenomenon, March and April will be the hottest months, especially in the eastern part of the country. However, several cold fronts are still expected to be recorded for March,” explained meteorologist César George.

According to projections, 2024 is expected to be hotter than the previous one, with temperatures that could exceed 44 degrees in some areas.

“The possibility of rain for the next few days is quite low. Remembering that temperatures are higher with the El Niño phenomenon, from 40 to 42 in Petén and 43 in Zacapa. The most worrying thing is that we have had a month of February without rain and at the moment in about 10 days we have no possibility of rain in some regions so more fires may be recorded,” explained the Insivumeh.
