Are you tired of scrolling through Netflix, searching for a movie that will really grab your attention? Look no further than “Missing,” the gripping thriller that has all the elements of a Netflix hit. From a talented cast to a twisty plot, this movie has it all. In this article, we’ll delve into just what makes “Missing” the kind of film that would have Netflix executives racing to acquire it.
Missing: A Tech-Savvy Murder-Mystery Thriller
Missing is a new thriller that is set to be released on Friday, April 21st. It is no coincidence that the movie kicks off with an episode of Unfiction, a made-up Netflix true-crime docu-series retelling the events of the 2018 movie ‘Searching,’ to which Missing is a sort-of-but-not-really sequel. Missing’s murder-mystery plot involving modern technology gives us an idea of the kind of deal that executives at Netflix would happily sign with the devil to get the rights to.
The movie plays out on largely laptop and phone screens, much like Searching, and its techno-thriller angle makes its protagonist, teenager June, more tech-savvy, dropping her into a much more dire situation. June had spent days partying while her mother (Grace) and soon-to-be-stepdad (Kevin) were on holiday in Colombia. Before their return, she headed to the airport to collect them but they never showed up. After local LA law enforcement proved to be no help, she contacted Colombian freelance worker Javier (Joaquim de Almeida) to track down the hotel her mom was staying in. However, she discovered her mom had left days earlier, leaving all of her belongings behind. This was where the mystery kicked in.
The storyline makes innovative use of everything at June’s disposal, from social media geolocation to online accounts and live camera feeds of popular tourist spots. This makes June’s descent into pure paranoia believable as she fears the worst, while also discovering that she may not have known her mother as well as she thought.
The tension in the first hour of the movie is kept at a maximum by first-time writer/directors Will Merrick and Nick Johnson. They pile up one crazy hairpin plot twist or potential red herring after another, leaving the audience unsure of who to trust. However, it doesn’t quite stick the landing once the actual mystery has been revealed, and there will be practically zero desire for a rewatch.
The movie is worth watching, though, as it makes for one hell of a ride while still managing to keep things intriguing. Missing would be an excellent choice for anyone looking for something fresh and exciting to watch.
The movie is set to arrive in Irish cinemas on Friday, 21 April. If you’re one to enjoy murder-mysteries with a sound tech premise, this is the movie for you.
Missing is a gripping and intense thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. With a talented cast and a cleverly crafted storyline, it’s the kind of movie that would be perfect for streaming on Netflix. It’s a shame that not many people have heard of it, but hopefully, this article has shed some light on this hidden gem. If you’re a fan of suspenseful thrillers, then Missing is definitely worth checking out. It’s a haunting and thought-provoking film that will stay with you long after the credits roll. So, the next time you’re scrolling through Netflix looking for something to watch, remember Missing and give it a chance. You won’t regret it.
