Get Ready for Norwegian Berries and Vegetables: Strawberries, Asparagus, Rhubarb, and More!

The season for Norwegian berries and vegetables is just getting started, and the first strawberries are now about to be picked.

– Small quantities of strawberries are already being harvested, but it will take at least 2-3 weeks until there will be enough to cover the market, writes Directorate of Agriculture in its weekly update.

They state that the production of strawberries is delayed this year due to the weather. It has been a long winter, where the start of spring was colder than normal.

Vegetables also on the way

A number of free-range vegetables are also now harvested on fields around Norway.

– Asparagus is harvested in small quantities. Rhubarb is just around the corner, according to the Norwegian Directorate of Agriculture.

Salads produced in open fields are now for sale on the market. They are also harvesting cauliflower and carrots.

– Small quantities of cauliflower are being harvested this week and the quantities are expected to increase in the coming weeks.

– New carrots have already been harvested, and they will be bundled in all regions this week, but it will take some time before there will be enough to cover the entire demand. This means that there will probably be a need for some supplementary imports, writes the directorate.

In Rogaland, they have also started selling turnips and radishes, while production in Eastern Norway will probably only start in a couple of weeks.

Stocks are about to be depleted

As for last year’s crops, i.e. vegetables that have been in storage, they are now beginning to be stored. The Directorate writes that it will probably be empty of red onions in the warehouses next week. For yellow onions, stocks will probably last another couple of weeks.

Stocks of head cabbage, turnips and potatoes are about to be depleted.

When it comes to vegetables produced in greenhouses, there is a good supply of cucumbers, and there is also a great demand for Norwegian tomatoes, according to the directorate.

– There is a great demand for Norwegian tomatoes, and what is produced is sold. Production now stands at approx. 600 tonnes a week, not much lower than the level at which production is planned to remain throughout the summer. The quality is good.
