Get an extra hour of sleep: winter has begun tonight | NOW

On the night from Saturday to Sunday, the clocks were moved back one hour at 03:00. With that, daylight saving time is over and so we have switched to winter time.

Changing the clock ensures we can sleep an extra hour tonight. It will be dark again in prime time from Sunday.

The onset of summer and winter time often creates uncertainty as to whether the clock should be moved back or forward.

But there are mnemonics for this. You can “win the time” with it when the winter hour begins. After all, the clock goes back one hour. Daylight saving time will resume in the last weekend of March 2023. The clocks go on in the spring.

Daylight saving time was once designed to allow people to make more use of available daylight and to save on electric lighting. For a while there was talk of the fact that changing the watch twice a year would be over. The European Parliament expressed its preference for this in 2019.

But then the idea was shelved. Since then, it is up to the Member States to agree on this, which has not yet happened.
