About ten years ago, the celebrity architect got Gert Wingårdh the question of designing a large modernist extension at the historic Stallmästaregården, which is from the 17th century and thus Stockholm’s oldest inn.

Mauro Scocco: “Gert Wingårdh at it again”

– It is quite common for buildings. So that doesn’t say much.

You have been in trouble before, not least with the rewritten extension at Liljevalchs, can such criticism make you sad?

– No, I certainly wouldn’t say that I feel sad. But I would perhaps wish that those who criticize could have a little more open mind.

– Regarding Liljevalchs, I see it from Hornsgatan quite often when I’m up in Stockholm. I think it is a fairly well-proportioned building on Djurgården, and quite discreet. I have a hard time understanding the rage and think there must be something else behind it that I don’t understand.

Edward Blom: “Horrifying and depressing”

Aftonbladet has also been in contact with Edward Blom.

– I strongly dislike when you put something in a completely different style on an old building. This style does not work with classical buildings. They have already had a lot built in at Stallmästaregården in the old style, and it wasn’t great either, as it covers the main building from the road. But at least it was a style that means you don’t notice any direct difference.

– This is still an attempt to make something a little softer and kinder, unlike his terrible concrete bunker at Liljevalchs, which is a total crime. If they had at least painted it, I could have put up with it. But there is no case where concrete gray is accepted. It’s horrible and depressing. I think a large part of today’s depressions is due to that. Untreated gray buildings that the architects shove down the throats of poor ordinary people to make them depressed and sad.
