Gert-Jan Segers swallows criticism of Mark Rutte

ChristenUnie leader Gert-Jan Segers has had to swallow another melon. He suggested in early April that his party no longer wanted to be part of a new cabinet if it is led by Mark Rutte. The bold statement came after the debate about the “function elsewhere” for Pieter Omtzigt and Rutte’s untrue statements about it. The decision was seen as a brave act by the often principled Segers. But now that the dust has settled and Rutte is still as firmly in the saddle as before, the reality turns out to be a bit different. The NOS writes:

“The perception was that in my criticism of the political culture in The Hague I played the man too much and the ball too little. Too much Rutte, too little for all of us. ” The ChristenUnie leader believes that the political culture in The Hague, from which, among other things, the benefits affair arose, is certainly not separate from the person Mark Rutte. “But that old culture does not stand or fall with one man. We ourselves are also part of it. ”

Segers made his retreating move during an online party conference of the ChristenUnie. He says that the party will stick to the decision not to want to be part of a Rutte-4 cabinet.
