A year ago the renovation had to be postponed because the SPÖ, FPÖ and ÖVP had voted against the plans in the finance committee of the district council – the Greens and NEOS were in favor. Due to the new majority in the district after the Vienna elections in autumn, the renewed vote was different: Greens and NEOS released the funds on Wednesday.
The Gersthofer Platzl will now be rebuilt in summer. According to the office of District Leader Silvia Nossek (Greens), the costs amount to around 700,000 euros. The city should take over around 60 percent.
“Uncomfortable and dangerous”
The aim is to make the Platzl “safe and worth living in,” said Nossek in a broadcast. Because: “Everyone who is out and about at the Gersthofer Platzl every day knows how uncomfortable and dangerous it is. Especially school children, but also everyone else, those who are out there on foot or by bike are affected, ”NEOS District Councilor Karin Riebenbauer is quoted as saying.
According to the district, more space and better crossings when changing and shopping, a longer bus lane and a waiting room for bus line 10A are now planned. In addition, five trees are to be planted and planting beds, benches and drinking fountains will be set up. That should also bring an upgrading of the market at Gersthofer Platzl.
In the run-up to the project, there was a participation process in which local residents, passers-by and business people were involved. Among other things, two citizens’ meetings were held and there was a two-week exhibition with information.
