The start of the 2023 season for New York Yankees star starter Gerrit Cole is exciting and reminiscent of his best seasons with the Houston Astros and his work has been rewarded this week by winning the Major League Player of the Week award.
Cole claimed the award after his two brilliant starts the week before in his days against Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins in which he won to extend his 2023 record to four wins without losses.
In total, the right-hander worked for 16 innings, in which he only allowed two earned runs and seven hits. In addition, he struck out 13 and walked three in his two-day tenure, posting a 1.13 ERA.
According to the Yankees schedule, Cole could still have two or three more starts scheduled in April and if he maintains his level, he could compete for the MLB Player of the Month award.
In 28.1 innings of work this season, Cole has four wins, 32 strikeouts, eight walks and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in each of his appearances.
Along with the Mules pitcher, fellow Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen took home the distinction by picking up two wins and not allowing any streaks in 13.2 innings of work.
