Germany’s Temporary Border Control Points to Combat Human Smuggling: Minister Fezer’s Views

The introduction of temporary border control points could be a way to more actively combat human smuggling, Fezer said in an interview with the “Welt am Sonntag” newspaper.

Germany has already increased its police presence on its border with both eastern neighbors.

However, Fezer pointed out that the implementation of stricter controls does not mean that there will be no more asylum seekers.

“If a person requests asylum at the border, the asylum request must be processed in Germany. This is a clear legal obligation,” the minister emphasized.

She added that the protection of the external border of the European Union (EU) is still crucial, which, in her opinion, can be achieved with a common asylum system.
