Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Ukraine continues to receive arms support from the West. In fact, Kyiv obtained advanced weapons such as HIMARS missiles from the United States (US) and Storm Shadow from Britain.
Apart from the US and UK, Germany apparently gave a signal that it would send the Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine. This weapon could give Kyiv the edge it needs to shift its ongoing counteroffensive into Russian-held Crimea.
A spokesperson for the German Ministry of Defense told Newsweek on Monday (7/8/2023) that they were unable to provide any new information regarding the transfer of the Taurus system to Ukraine. However, the advantages of this weapon have been discussed by defense analyst from the University of Oslo, Norway, Fabian Hoffman.
Hoffman says Taurus’ characteristics are actually similar to those of Storm Shadow. However, according to Hoffman, Storm Shadow actually felt unable to completely damage the Kerch Strait Bridge, referring to the latest attack on the bridge connecting mainland Russia with Crimea.
However, for Taurus, Hoffman said this weapon could blow up the pillars of the building it was targeting. The reason is, Taurus has a second explosive power that maximizes damage.
“This is one area where Taurus can provide a qualitative advantage,” Hoffmann told Newsweekquoted on Wednesday (9/8/2023).
Meanwhile, military expert David Hambling actually says Storm Shadow and Taurus have the same advantage. In his view, how effective these two missiles will be depends on how Ukraine uses them.
“How effective Taurus or Storm Shadows are depends on how Ukraine will use them, such as targeting bridge supports or highways,” he said.
The destruction of bridges in Crimea could cut off Russian supplies to the peninsula. Moscow is known to have military logistics centers spread across the peninsula to launch military attacks on other Ukrainian territories. One of them is Dzhankoi.
“Dzhankoi is home to one of Russia’s most important military airstrips in Crimea as well as being an important major road and rail crossroads for supplying Russian troops in Southern Ukraine,” the British Ministry of Defence said.
