Germany’s Olympic team suspended training match after racist harassment of players

Germany is one of the teams participating in the Olympics in Tokyo on the men’s side. The team is currently in Japan, and played a training match against Honduras on Saturday.

However, the match was interrupted by the German team after Jordan Torunarigha in the German team is said to have been racistly harassed.

– When one of our players is racistly harassed, it is not an option to continue playing, says German Olympic team coach Stefan Kuntz in a comment on DFB’s website.

For German Bild, Kuntz develops:

– Jordan was incredibly upset, he said that he repeatedly received racist insults. We made eye contact and it became clear to us: This goes against what we stand for, we can not tolerate it, we protect our players.

According to Bild, it is unclear exactly what should have happened, but according to the newspaper, it must have been an opponent in Honduras who allegedly harassed Torunarigha.

– After the situation calmed down a bit, the entire Honduran squad came over to us and apologized. With that, the thing was over for us.

Germany begins its Olympic tournament against Brazil on July 22.
