It is getting serious.
The German national team is only one test match away from the European Handball Championship. From January 10th to 28th, 2024 there will be a fight for the handball crown in Europe.
But before that there is the second test against Portugal within a few days. On Thursday, Germany celebrated a narrow victory in Flensburg 34:33 (18:14). The second edition will take place on Saturday (6 p.m.).

In the first Portugal test, Germany was able to rely primarily on goalkeeper Andreas Wolff (32) and playmaker Juri Knorr (23/6 goals). Despite the victory, national coach Alfred Gislason (64) was not satisfied with his team’s performance.
Gislason: “What makes me very dissatisfied is that we lost track after the half-time break and made a lot of mistakes.” And: “That was not the defensive and goalkeeping performance in the second half that we imagined.”
One thing is clear: the Icelander knows what a tournament in Germany feels like. In 2007 he was there first-hand at the German World Cup winter fairytale as national coach of his home country.
Gislason: “Back then I experienced the special nature of a tournament in Germany.” And: “Now I’m particularly looking forward to experiencing a tournament at home as Germany’s national coach. For me this is a highlight.”

The tournament is already something very special. Because: For the first time, a men’s handball championship will take place in Germany. For the German team, the tournament begins next Wednesday against Switzerland. Then it’s in Berlin against North Macedonia and record world champions France. Only the top two finishers reach the main round.
Before that, however, the anticipation of the European Championship in Germany should be catapulted with a second win against Portugal.
