It would be a mistake for Germany to shut down more nuclear power plants if it means burning more coal, says Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg.
German authorities are now considering phasing out nuclear power as planned this year despite the energy crisis resulting from the war in Ukraine.
– It is a bad idea to focus on coal when nuclear power already exists, says Thunberg in an interview with German broadcaster ARD.
The case sparked a great deal of debate in Germany.
Green Party Economy Minister Robert Habeck has proposed that two of the nuclear power plants can be kept running until April next year, but is opposed to keeping them running longer for safety reasons.
At the same time, Habeck approved the reopening of several coal and oil-fired power plants to secure energy supply after Russia cut off gas supplies to Europe.
