Germany’s Interior Minister Proposes Better Protection Against ATM Blasts

Interior Minister Thomas Strobl wants to persuade banks and savings banks to provide better protection against ATM blasts – for example through tightened insurance conditions. At the conference of interior ministers next week, he will bring in “that incentives for better protective measures will be created – for example through maximum limits for insurance or through deductibles,” said the CDU politician of the German Press Agency. “If that doesn’t bear fruit, we need a legal regulation that obliges ATM operators to implement effective protection against ATM blasts.” It is now the task of ATM operators to implement specific preventive measures through their own efforts.

Last year, 34 ATMs in Baden-Württemberg were damaged or completely blown up, the Interior Ministry said. The blowing up of ATMs has almost replaced the “classic” bank robbery for several years.
