Germany’s industrial production rises in April but falls short of expectations

Germany’s industrial production increased in April thanks to the construction sector and the strong performance of pharmaceutical products, but the rise was slightly less than expected.

The Federal Statistics Office said on Wednesday that production increased by 0.3 percent from the previous month. In a Reuters poll, analysts expected an increase of 0.6 percent.

The bureau revised data for March to a 2.1 percent decline from a 3.4 percent decrease reported in preliminary data.

Although production increased in April, weak new orders paint a bleak picture for the industry in the months ahead. Industrial orders fell 0.4 percent in April on a monthly basis.
