Germany’s First Top Manager Speaks Out on Proposal for Anti-Hate Clause in Bundesliga Contracts

It was a sensational proposal for all Bundesliga contracts – now the league’s first top manager is speaking.

Alon Meyer, the Germany head of the Jewish sports movement Makkabi, expressed on Saturday the idea that the German Football League (DFL) should discuss an anti-hate clause in the contracts of ALL Bundesliga professionals.

Anyone who wants to play in the Bundesliga must recognize Israel’s right to exist, said Meyer. This is the Federal Republic’s official reason of state anyway.

The trigger for the proposal: the brutal terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel and the resulting anti-Israel and trivializing statements made by Mainz player El Ghazi and Bayern star Noussair Mazraoui last week.

Is such an anti-hate clause possible in the Bundesliga?

Now Frankfurt sports director Markus Krösche (43), the first manager, to speak about the proposal on the BILD program “Situ der Liga”.

Krösche: “I don’t know if that’s possible. All such ideas are helpful, we’ll have to see how they can be implemented. It is important that we communicate in general. Communicate with players of different origins and religions. As clubs, we have to create openness and also convey and exemplify these values. A team is also a reflection of society. Ultimately, it’s about us all treating each other with respect and respecting different opinions. A clause like this can definitely be helpful.”

Mainz fires El Ghazi. FC Bayern lets its Mazraoui get away with a wimpy explanation. However, things have been quiet around Eintracht Frankfurt in the last few days.

Krösche: “We have three players who are Muslims, we have also spoken to them. What is happening there in Israel is terrible and strongly condemnable. We solved this in Frankfurt with communication.”
