Germany’s First Friedweinberg in Nordheim am Main: A Beautiful Final Resting Place Amongst Vineyards

Under the Vogelsburg, right on the Main loop, surrounded by vineyards: the surroundings couldn’t be more idyllic. Right next to the New Cemetery in Nordheim am Main is Germany’s first Friedweinberg – on a formerly used vineyard. Biodegradable urns have been able to be buried under almost 200 vines since December 2018. Wolfgang Becker strolls through the grounds on a sunny afternoon; the 74-year-old and his wife could easily imagine finding their final rest among the vineyards one day.

Friedweinberg: connection to the region and the people

The retired Bundeswehr officer originally comes from the Ruhr area and has lived in the Allgäu for many years. But 30 years ago he happened to stop by car in Volkach, Lower Franconia, fell in love with the region straight away and now has a second home here. The love of wine and the friendship with local winegrowers both play an important role in the decision for the Friedweinberg: “The love for wine arose through this strong friendship and through working in the vineyard. That’s where I came up with the idea of the Friedweinberg “I’m thrilled. I could certainly imagine that,” says Wolfgang Becker.

Over 180 urn places occupied

And that’s how it is for many people, the alternative form of burial has been very well received since the inauguration, says Nordheim’s mayor Sibylle Säger (CSU/FB): “We have a lot of tourists who are on vacation here in the wine-growing community in the Mainschleifen region. And that’s where it is It is obvious that you drink wine and also walk the vineyards. The Friedweinberg is very popular with the locals and also with the guests because they have this connection to Nordheim and the wine.” In the past five years, over 80 urns have been buried in Nordheim’s Friedweinberg, and a further 100 berths have been reserved by people from all over Germany. There are only two other Friedweinbergs nationwide, both of which are in Rhineland-Palatinate.
